Is it still quite dangerous in Compton? In the 1980s-1990s it was the worst place in the whole of LA.

It was a park once, I remember the baseball field that used to be here. Later it became a dumping ground, some of us from Enterprise Jr High would spend our lunch break hiding out here. There were hills and other junk stacked up to hide us. By the 90s they had cleaned it up and smoothed it out and left it as the big wide lot it is now.

I grew up in Richland Farms, part of Compton California in the 1950 through the 60's. There is a park there named after Mr. Ellerman. I knew Mr. Ellerman and I wish more people could have know him. He was a single father to a special needs daughter. He took care of her and raised parakeets. He also was a great mentor to the local children, having had a tremendous impact on me. Mr. Ellerman had many games, books and puzzles that he would keep on his large screened in front porch. Children from the neighbor hood would hang out there for lemonade on hot summer days and play the games, work the puzzles and read the books. He let some of us help him with the birds. I raised and nursed several birds that could not survive in the cages. Mr. Ellerman always had on these big bib overalls, a white long sleeve shirt and most days a tie. He encouraged all of us to think out the problems and find our own solutions, giving us just enough help to keep us motivated. When he died, he left the land to the city for a children's park; how fitting. I wish people knew who he was.

April 28, 2010 BY ALLISON JEAN EATON / COMPTON BULLETIN Compton’s new shopping center, the Gateway Towne Center, narrowly avoided forclosure after it was able to secure $29 million in permanent financing through a new tax-credit mechanism. Community Development Financial Institutions Clearinghouse officials said this recent loan saved the shopping center, which would have gone into foreclosure had the permanent financing not been secured. City officials had not previously shared such information with the community.

The oldest grave I ever found there was from 1874 or so, a soldiers grave near the center. Evergreen cemetery in E. L.A is supposed to be the oldest cemetery in L.A dating to around the same time period but I dont know.
